remember the pearl

With seventy-seven escaping enslaved people aboard, the Pearl left the 7th Street pier in Southwest, DC to sail north to freedom on April 15th, 1848. Delayed by weather a faster ship hired by a Georgetown slave owner overtook the Pearl and captured the crew and passengers. Remember THE PEARL celebrates the escaping enslaved people and crew. We name them. We honor the spirit that impelled them to seek freedom. We dedicate ourselves to drawing inspiration from those who resisted oppression.

Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Colbert I. King writes about the largest known nonviolent escape attempt ever made by enslaved Black people in the US  and why this history continues to be important for all Americans to know. Read the article.
